Steve Wilson, a veteran news reporter with The Cincinnati Enquirer, Gannett News Service and USA Today, draws upon his experience of covering national crises as a journalist and helping solve them as a crisis management consultant.
Wilson operates under the belief that organizations often can find opportunity even in the midst of a crisis. But, he adds, they must be prepared and know where to look to find those opportunities.
"To the public and news media," he says, "it is often not so much what a company or organization has done, but what they are doing about it. And in a crisis, actions speak far louder than words and believability is more important than skillfully-crafted sound bites."
His no-nonsense approach to crisis management has won him praise from both the business community and the news media as well as an enviable list of clients including many Fortune 500 corporations.
In addition to providing crisis management counsel, Wilson personally participates in every one of The Wilson Group's media training workshops and mock disasters.
Born and raised in the Midwest, Wilson took his first newspaper job at age 18 and was a combat correspondent during the Vietnam War. He covered politics for 10 years before joining the staff of the then, brand-new USA Today. He founded The Wilson Group in 1987. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for excellence in journalism while a bureau chief for Gannett News Service.
Today, he continues writing and has authored numerous articles for magazines and newspapers as well as the book, "Real People, Real Crises: An Inside Look at Corporate Crisis Communications". In addition he regularly speaks to colleges, universities and professional associations throughout the U.S.
